Figure Sculpture Competition

The next sculpture competition will be held in 2018.

The GCA and the advent of this competition are made possible with the generous support of the Morris and Alma Schapiro Fund.

  • About

The Grand Central Atelier is proud to contribute this figure modeling competition to the growing renewal of classical figurative sculpture. The weeklong schedule of sculpting and events will encourage classical figurative sculpture and bring together exceptionally talented artists for dialogue and public review.

Eligibility: The competition is open to all figurative sculptors, including previous finalists. Participants will be selected on the basis of their modeling ability and demonstrated aspirations to make beautiful, excellent classical sculpture.

Summary: Finalists will compete for five days to model a half-size figure from life with the model posing 8 hours each day for a total pose of 40 hours. The GCA will host an armature-building Meet & Greet on the day prior to the competition. During the daily lunch hour, 1-2pm we will open the competition room for public viewing. On the final evening, we will host an awards ceremony and reception, also open to the public.

Materials: The GCA will provide water-based modeling clay, armature building materials, modeling stands, wrapping materials and water bottles. Finalists are to bring all personal sculpting tools.

Awards: $10,000, $3,000 and $2,000 for first, second and third place respectively.

Judges: Each year the GCA invites celebrated artists working in the classical tradition and professionals dealing in classical sculpture to serve on our panel of judges.

  • Criteria For Judging

The judging will take place in two rounds:

The first round of judging is based on a point system (1-5) with the following criteria:
    1. Correct proportion based on the model
    2. Correct or natural gesture again based on the model
    3. Correct understanding of anatomy
    4. The sculpture is to exhibit a consistent finish
    5. correct observation of the fullness of the masses

The second round of judging is based on artistic strength:
Those 4 or 5 sculptures exhibiting the greatest strength in these areas will move to a final round wherein the judges will decide the winners based on what they consider to be the greatest overall success considering artistic strength.
