Still Life Painting Competition

June 22 – 27, 2017.

The GCA and the advent of this competition are made possible with the generous support of the Morris and Alma Schapiro Fund.

  • About

Finalists will compete for 48 hours over 6 days to paint a still life. Each day has two sets of 4 hour blocks in which artists may work. The day starts at 9am and finishes at 6pm. From 1-2pm, is the lunch break during which time the public may view the works-in-progress. There is to be no work done outside of the official competition hours or during lunch. Please note that the studio uses natural light. Artists may only work with oil paint. Additional guidelines will be provided to the twelve finalists.

The first day may be spent setting up the composition. The finalists may bring in possible objects to paint but they will be required to also include 3 out of a possible 6 objects that will be selected by the judges and revealed on the first day.

On the final evening from 7-9pm, we will host an awards ceremony and reception, open to the public. The judges will confer starting at 6pm to review and discuss the paintings. After the announcement of the winners, all of the finalists’ works may be viewed by the public.

The paintings will then be featured in a show at our adjacent gallery, Eleventh Street Arts, for two months. Finalists should be willing to exhibit and consider selling their work. The gallery charges 30% commission for any sales.

Eligibility: The competition is open to all artists. Students and professionals, young and old, are encouraged to apply.

Awards: $10,000, $3,000 and $2,000 for first, second and third place respectively.

Finalist Judges: Michael Klein and Edward Minoff

Competition Judges: Tony Curanaj, William Gerdts, and Sarah Lamb

  • Criteria For Judging

The paintings will be evaluated for drawing, composition, perspective, light effect, and paint quality. Each work will also be judged as an overall work of art and for whether it speaks to the aesthetic values of the classical still life tradition.
