Study - Architecture Classes

Celebrating the collaboration between artists and architects, classes in the art of architecture will follow the methods of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts drawing from classical architecture, art and design.

Instruction will encompass observational drawing, architectural drafting, systematic design methodology, the classical orders, geometry and proportion, traditional methods of architectural wash rendering and drawing, the history and theory of classical architecture, and modeling and sculpting. New York City's architecture offers rich and varied opportunities for on-site observation and field drawing.

Winter Registration Opens November 1st at noon!

Fee: $415 (payable in two monthly installments by credit card only.)

    Limit: 8-10 artists

This studio will serve as an introduction to the concepts of drawing and painting architecture, specifically in the genre of the architectural capriccio. We will be studying the compositions of Hubert Robert, Giovanni Paolo Panini, Marco Ricci and Viviano Codazzi.

For the first six weeks our focus will be composition and tonal pictorial arrangement. We will achieve this through master copies of these artists from quality reproductions. Quick one-day copies will teach artists to quickly mix colors and absorb the lessons of picture making.

The next six weeks will be spent on lengthier studies. Here, we will focus on details and careful drawing. We will complete studies in oil and ink wash of the orders to better understand the individual parts that make up the whole. Here, time will also be spent on perspective theory as understood in the Renaissance as a tool of the constructed environment.

Our-long term goal for this course is to apply these lessons to painting on-site in the Spring of 2018. Although there is a trajectory for this course students will be encouraged to work at their own pace. Attendance for the whole session or for the entire session is not required.

The elements of classical architecture form the visual backdrop of western society and play an important role in classical painting.  This course provides detailed instruction for the creation of these architectural elements.  In class we will draw each of the five orders including their bases, column shafts, capitals and entablatures;  and look at basic compositional principles.  We also will look at their proportional relations, geometric constructions and mythic associations.  Students will become familiar with the reference works that describe the elements.  Students should be prepared to draw the elements in class, freehand or drafted to generate a notebook for future reference.

Students should bring a notebook or loose sheets, minimum 9 x 12, pencils or other dry media, and, if they wish drafting tools such as T-square, triangles, compass, templates or other tools.

A useful text for the students to have for the class is 'The American Vignola' by William R Ware, published by Dover.

In this class, students will receive an introduction to classical ornamental motifs and their historical uses within classical architecture. Through the mediums of pencil, ink pen, and wash, students will build an understanding of the fluid and calligraphic nature of ornament. Exercises will include proportioned drawings of the acanthus leaf, copying master drawings of ornament, and drawing from historic ornamental plaster casts. Emphasis will be placed on the expressiveness of ornament, encouraging students to lay down quick and confident lines. Through learning several common motifs, and developing the muscle memory to construction them on paper, students will become better equipped to sketch ornate classical spaces, both from observation and imagination.
