Grand Central Atelier

Study - Classes: Weekday Afternoons & Evenings

Afternoon, Evening and Weekend Studios are for artists in drawing, painting, and sculpture who share the Grand Central Atelier's ideals, and who aspire to high artistic fluency.

As in the full-time apprenticeship, the training is progressive. Evening and weekend participants are encouraged to begin in the cast hall. For those who are passionate and ambitious, this is an exciting introduction to the study of nature through the lens of classical realism. Cast drawing trainees will rapidly learn a tremendous number of complex and interrelated ideas. Only after this are they encouraged to study the figure, portrait, and still life, all of which expand on those early foundations.

This accessible avenue also allows the artist entry to other programs at the Grand Central Atelier encouraging interaction between the entire community. Additionally, evening and weekend programs provide portfolio opportunities for those interested in full-time apprenticeship, which views careful drawings as a sign of focused dedication.

The winter session of classes will open for registration for new students on Wednesday, November 1st. Most classes will start the week of January 8th, 2018. Any exceptions are noted on the specific class pages.

Participants will draw and paint the portrait from a single pose lasting several weeks. The first several sessions of each pose will consist of drawing on paper to establish an accurate likeness, proportions, and structure in a linear mode. When the drawing is complete it will be transferred for painting*. The following weeks will proceed in a rational way, applying paint incrementally through an understanding of the effect of light on form. This procedure will include lengthy discussions on the physical events that cause particular hue, value and chroma properties. Beginning to advanced artists are welcome.

It is recommended that artists have drawn and/or painted in the Cast Hall before taking Portrait.

*If artists have little experience painting or prefer to remain in a drawing mode they can opt to render fully in graphite on paper.

This studio will serve as an introduction to the concepts of drawing and painting.  We will start by covering the basics of how to approach an initial linear drawing, or “block-in” focusing on the various techniques that we can employ as we strive for accuracy in shape, proportion and gesture.   We will then move straight in to modeling form, three dimensionally, as we discuss the fundamentals and nuances of how light works as well as how to depict it on a two dimensional surface.  During this time artists will learn to think about their drawings in sculptural terms by utilizing a conceptual understanding of light fall which will allow for a greater sense of depth and realism in their finished drawings and paintings.

Time will also be spent discussing materials as well as ways to set yourself up for success before you begin your drawing.

Artists will be trained to think sculpturally, to make more accurate decisions, and to create drawings and paintings that are true to life.

Everyone works at their own pace. Attendance at every session is NOT required.

This is the foundation for most of our other studios/workshops, and is highly recommended to take first.

This workshop will teach traditional methods and concepts used to create realistic still life paintings. Using direct observation, historical conventions, and imagination, artists will compose, draw, and paint a still life. We will look at still life painting from different times and places in history in an effort to develop our aesthetic sensibility and to familiarize ourselves with the processes involved with the practice.

Upon selecting a subject, the artist will create a composition, execute an accurate line drawing on paper with pencil, and then transfer the drawing onto the painting surface. The painting will consist of two layers. The first layer is the grisaille, which can be characterized as a transparent, brown and white version of the painting. The grisaille will establish the general tonal range needed to describe each object in the composition using only brown and white paint. When this is finished and dry, the artist will, in full color, paint each part to completion using their acquired understanding of light, color, and form.

The elements of classical architecture form the visual backdrop of western society and play an important role in classical painting.  This course provides detailed instruction for the creation of these architectural elements.  In class we will draw each of the five orders including their bases, column shafts, capitals and entablatures;  and look at basic compositional principles.  We also will look at their proportional relations, geometric constructions and mythic associations.  Students will become familiar with the reference works that describe the elements.  Students should be prepared to draw the elements in class, freehand or drafted to generate a notebook for future reference.

Students should bring a notebook or loose sheets, minimum 9 x 12, pencils or other dry media, and, if they wish drafting tools such as T-square, triangles, compass, templates or other tools.

Emphasis will be placed on the expressiveness of ornament, encouraging students to lay down quick and confident lines. Through learning several common motifs, and developing the muscle memory to construction them on paper, students will become better equipped to sketch ornate classical spaces, both from observation and imagination.
