Grand Central Atelier

Study - Spring Classes: Weekday Afternoons & Evenings

Afternoon, Evening and Weekend Studios are for artists in drawing, painting, and sculpture who share the Grand Central Atelier's ideals, and who aspire to high artistic fluency.

As in the full-time apprenticeship, the training is progressive. Evening and weekend participants are encouraged to begin in the cast hall. For those who are passionate and ambitious, this is an exciting introduction to the study of nature through the lens of classical realism. Cast drawing trainees will rapidly learn a tremendous number of complex and interrelated ideas. Only after this are they encouraged to study the figure, portrait, and still life, all of which expand on those early foundations.

This accessible avenue also allows the artist entry to other programs at the Grand Central Atelier encouraging interaction between the entire community. Additionally, evening and weekend programs provide portfolio opportunities for those interested in full-time apprenticeship, which views careful drawings as a sign of focused dedication.

    Limit: 14 artists

Participants will draw and paint the portrait from a single pose lasting several weeks. The first several sessions of each pose will consist of drawing on paper to establish an accurate likeness, proportions, and structure in a linear mode. When the drawing is complete it will be transferred to linen for painting*. The following weeks will proceed in a rational way, applying paint incrementally through an understanding of the effect of light on form. This procedure will include lengthy discussions on the physical events that cause particular hue, value and chroma properties. Beginning to advanced artists are welcome.

It is recommended that artists have drawn and/or painted in the Cast Hall before taking Portrait.

*If artists have little experience painting or prefer to remain in a drawing mode they can opt to render fully in graphite on paper.

Please note this class is held/taught concurrently with the evening cast class. There are a limited number of Still Life spots available.

This workshop will teach traditional methods and concepts used to create realistic still life paintings. Using direct observation, historical conventions, and imagination, artists will compose, draw, and paint a still life. We will look at still life painting from different times and places in history in an effort to develop our aesthetic sensibility and to familiarize ourselves with the processes involved with the practice.

Upon selecting a subject, the artist will create a composition, execute an accurate line drawing on paper with pencil, and then transfer the drawing onto the painting surface. The painting will consist of two layers. The first layer is the grisaille, which can be characterized as a transparent, brown and white version of the painting. The grisaille will establish the general tonal range needed to describe each object in the composition using only brown and white paint. When this is finished and dry, the artist will, in full color, paint each part to completion using their acquired understanding of light, color, and form.

Copying the Masters is an insightful practice to enrich your personal design choices, cultivate taste, and form a personal style. By examining successful works from the past, we can better comprehend an artist's design and composition through elements such as line, value structure, and color palette, as well as technical decisions through complex structures like the human form, drapery, foliage, clouds, etc.

Each class, artists will choose from a selection of Master paintings and drawings to complete in one session. Among the artists we will be focusing on are Frederic Church, Sanford Gifford, Albert Bierstadt, William Bouguereau, John Singer Sargent. Artists will be encouraged to copy in either graphite, limited palette, or full color palette. Whether you are drawing or painting, we will be examining the careful design of each composition and its arrangement of value and how these elements add to the viewer's experience of each painting or drawing. This experience will train your eye to be more efficient at recognizing values independent from their color and giving your more control and organization on your palette.

This class can be tailored for beginner through advanced level artists. Beginners may be initially encouraged to study portions of their Master work, or transform them into value or color studies. No matter what the artist chooses to focus on, the outcome of studying from the masters is always rewarding.

Spring Session: 8 classes - Painting Paper
    March 30 - May 18
    1:00 - 5:00pm
Fee: $335 - payable in two monthly installments by credit card only.

This still life workshop series will focus on a different object or material per session where participating artists will arrange their own composition that includes at least one example of the selected "thing". This session the selected material is paper. We will closely examine the selected material and ultimately apply our understanding of its qualities and characteristics towards its replication in paint. We will also look at master paintings with the purpose of identifying the conventions and methods used to render the specific material. Please note that the subject material of paper is suggested and not required.

To create the works, we will use a specific and repeatable procedure that consists of a preliminary drawing, a brown and white underpainting, and a final color layer. Due to the time limitation and importance of experiencing the entire production process, still life set ups should be simple with the size of the work being between 8x10 and 11x14. It is also recommended that the metal object not be too polished. Please note that other objects and materials can be included too so long as at least one object consists of the common object or material.

Additional materials list accessible via a link at the bottom of this page.

Please fill out the registration form accessible via the link below whether you are paying by cash, check or credit card. Cash or checks must be received within a few days to hold your spot and must be for the full amount.
