With an emphasis on naturalistic proportion and gesture, students will improve their understanding of the figure by incorporating the use of the skeleton, plaster casts (ecorche), and master drawings into their life studies. Over the course of one week students will learn to complete a carefully rendered drawing from the live model. Colleen will lecture and diagram on her own drawing explaining concepts concerning the development of form, value relationships, human proportion and key anatomical landmarks. Colleen will critique each students work illustrating anatomical landmarks, proportional systems, and structural conventions with the aid of masterworks from the Renaissance through to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. By developing their drawings alongside the skeleton students will develop a conceptual understanding of the body that may be applied to observational drawing as well as studies from memory and imagination.

Some prior figure drawing experience recommended.

Complimentary to the first two weeks of learning to draw, the Painting Boot Camp for Teens first introduces students to the grisaille method of cast painting. The students will then learn concepts of color through one 8 day portrait painting from life. Two portrait sketch sessions in color will also form part of the workshop.

Subjects discussed throughout the two weeks will include form modeling, linear and volumetric thinking, as well as optical and conceptual differences of light and color.

Instructors Liz Beard and Kevin Muller Cisneros will lead the group with demonstrations, lectures and individual critiques each day fostering an environment for discussion, discovery and practice.

This workshop is ideal for beginners to intermediate skill level artists ages 13-18.

It is strongly recommended to take the Drawing Boot Camp for teens if the student is looking to get a thorough experience of the Grand Central Atelier’s full-time program.
