Over the course of one week students will learn to complete a carefully rendered drawing from the live model. Colleen will lecture and diagram on her own drawing explaining concepts concerning the development of form, value relationships, human proportion and key anatomical landmarks. Colleen will critique each students work illustrating anatomical landmarks, proportional systems, and structural conventions with the aid of masterworks from the Renaissance through to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. By developing their drawings alongside the skeleton students will develop a conceptual understanding of the body that may be applied to observational drawing as well as studies from memory and imagination.

Some prior figure drawing experience recommended.

Take Colleen Barry's June Structure workshop and receive 5% off this workshop. Please note: There is no discount off of Coleen's workshop.

In this 3 day workshop, we will discuss a method in which to approach drawing the figure from life with a goal of obtaining the original gesture. Students will develop a single drawing exploring the use of line, shape and form as directed by the gesture and proportion of the life model.  Often as a drawing develops, what initially inspired us gets lost or stiffens in the technical process of the drawings development.   Jessica will demonstrate how to find gesture and obtain it by constructing the figure through proportion and rhythms between key anatomical landmarks. She will give personalized critiques that will guide each student through the development of proportion, the use of anatomical landmarks, and the construction of form to confidently approach drawing the figure on their own.

The workshop is designed for both beginning and advanced students, with a strong emphasis on process and how to begin a drawing. Jessica’s hope for all students is to go home with a comprehensive method of starting a figure drawing from the simplest to most complex poses.

*Take 2 Boot Camp workshops save 10% off the total cost: $1170
    Discount given after final payment.

Priority is given to students taking the full boot camp but there are a few ala carte spots available in each week.

Please note: students taking cast and continuing onto other boot camp workshops, may continue to work on their cast projects during M-F from 5-9pm and receive periodic critiques during the day from their current instructors.

By working in the controlled setting of the cast hall, students wil be given an opportunity to focus on the fundamental concepts of depicting light and form, which are at the heart of the entire Grand Central Atelier's method of drawing and painting.  We will start by discussing how to approach an initial linear drawing (the “block-in”) focusing on the various techniques that we can employ as we strive for accuracy in shape, proportion and gesture.   We will then move straight in to modeling form, three dimensionally, as we discuss the fundamentals and nuances of how light works as well as how to depict it on a two dimensional surface.  During this time students will learn to think about their drawings in sculptural terms by utilizing a conceptual understanding of light fall which will allow for a greater sense of depth and realism in their finished drawings and paintings.

Time will also be spent discussing materials as well as ways to set yourself up for success before you begin your drawing.

Artists will be trained to think sculpturally, to make more accurate decisions, and to create drawings and paintings that are true to life.

This workshop will include demonstrations/lectures on each step of the process as well as frequent one on one critiques from the instructor. Students will work at their own pace and will spend the majority of the time working on their own drawings.  However, due to the short time frame, emphasis will be put on fully learning and understanding concepts, rather than creating completely finished works of art. This workshop will be a great opportunity to learn many of the key concepts taught at GCA in a short, condensed time frame.

Ideal for beginners or artists looking to hone and strengthen foundational skills.

Building off the lessons in week 1 with the cast, participants will draw the portrait from a single pose lasting a total of 30 hours over the course of five days. After completing a highly developed linear block-in with instruction emphasizing proportion, structure, line quality and likeness, artists will proceed to rendering the portrait in graphite in the "window shading" style. Completing one form at a time, students will be guided by detailed explanation of the physical properties of light on form.

Demonstrations and discussions on establishing an accurate value range, anatomy, perspective, and materials will accompany individual critiques.

The figure boot camp is an opportunity to immerse yourself in learning from the live model. Students will work on one drawing to better comprehend the process of drawing the figure from life from start to finish. Concepts such as gesture, comparative measure, proportional relationships, and form will be discussed through sculptural and anatomical approaches.

During the week, both demonstration and one-on-one critiques will help students develop the skills needed to render a figure drawing from the live model. The goal will to have developed a convincingly 3 dimensional figure drawing through the conceptualization of the entire figure and its parts in relation to the light. Together we will work through each step of a figure drawing, starting with an engaging and informative block-in to the “finish’ or rendered figure, all the while striving for accuracy and nuance.

The first morning will include several short poses followed by a single pose for the remainder of the workshop. This workshop is Ideal for beginners or intermediate level artists looking to hone and strengthen foundational skills.

During this final week of Boot Camp, we go beyond the human figure to include the studio setting. Emphasis will be placed on the application of perspective and value hierarchy in regards to composition through careful observation. Over the course of one week artists will learn to complete a carefully rendered drawing of the live model within a studio setting. Artists will be working on toned paper (made in class) with graphite and white chalk.

Throughout the week, both demonstration and one-on-one critiques will help students develop an understanding of spatial relationships, construction of depth and the use of visual cues. All necessary elements of a healthy composition. The theory of linear perspective will be also be introduced as it was known in the Renaissance as a tool of the constructed environment.

This workshop is ideal for beginners or intermediate level artists looking to hone and strengthen foundational skills of perspective in regards to the figural composition.

Whether it’s a long pose or a short pose, a drawing starts with the action. Without action the work is immediately compromised. In this five-day intensive workshop the longest pose will be twenty minutes.  The emphasis will be on finding the action and constructing the figure convincingly in three-dimensional space by using strong geometric and perspective concepts.  Structural landmarks relating to the skeleton will be used as guidelines for tracking the figure’s movements in space. The ability to capture fleeting movements while thinking three-dimensionally will enable the artist to represent the figure in poses that would otherwise be impossible for the model to hold for a longer amount of time. This skill will increase an artist’s creative freedom in narrative figure work.

Modeling form is only as successful as the artist’s ability to construct a three-dimensional line drawing. This is the hallmark of classical drawing. Lectures and demonstrations will be given to lead the students through this clear and logical process of drawing.

In this week long workshop, artists will learn an historical approach to drawing the portrait using different colored chalks. This method was popularized by Peter Paul Rubens in the seventeenth century and ultimately adopted by French academicians under the term trios-couleurs. The use of three colored chalks (black, red, and white) allows the artist not only to explore light and shade, but also the subtle hue shifts characteristic of living flesh.

With the goal of completing a finished portrait at the end of the week, the studio will engage directly in the fundamentals of representation including: character likeness, facial anatomy/ structure, and form modeling

This is an intermediate to advanced level workshop. Some prior experience drawing the portrait is recommended.

In our NEW Drawing Boot Camp for Teens, students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of drawing over the course of ten days. Mornings and afternoons will be divided into drawing from traditional classical cast sculpture and portrait drawing from the live model, respectively.

    Mornings

With cast drawing, under the guidance of our classically trained instructors, students will focus on the fundamental techniques of Grand Central Atelier’s method by studying comparative measuring, light and form using a step-by-step process. Each student will be working from different casts and progress at their own pace.

    Afternoons

Students will develop an understanding of the human head and features by way of a long portrait pose and two three-hour portrait sketches working from three different live models. This dynamic structure will allow the students to experience both a measured and conventional manner through the eight-day pose and a more immediate approach during the two portrait sketch sessions. All portrait models are fully clothed.

Principles introduced in the morning session will be built upon in the afternoon. Subjects include form modeling, line and mass drawing, proportions, and structural points of the human skull.

Instructors Liz Beard and Kevin Müller Cisneros will lead the group with demonstrations, lectures and individual critiques each day fostering an environment for discussion, discovery and practice.

This workshop is ideal for beginners to intermediate skill level artists ages 13-18.
