This Workshop will serve as an introduction into painting architecture from life. Our subject will be the NY Public Library located at Bryant Park. When painting architecture it is important to know the individual forms before attempting to tackle the entire building. We will spend the week on several architectural details, completing small oil paintings of each detail.

The importance of accurate drawing will be encouraged throughout the week. We will use comparative measuring in addition to knowledge of classical canons to solve for proportion, drawing directly on the canvas. Color will be applied in subsequent layers of alternating warms and cools. Each painting will consider the use of historical convention as well as the effects of careful and humble observations.

Rainy days will be spent in the GCA studios if necessary, where we will study, in oil, the works of Panini and Robert Hubert.

What is it about Spanish still-life that sets it apart from Flemish, Dutch or French still-life? Have you wondered how painters like Cotan, Zurbaran, Pereda and Melendez transformed the ordinary contents of a kitchen pantry into stunning little baroque theaters? In this class, you'll design and paint your own Spanish still-life that makes full use of dramatic, typically Spanish conventions— those that turn something like onions or ordinary pantry items into something beautifully mysterious.  We’ll be emphasizing the paintings of Juan Sanchez Cotán; each student will have use of a “Spanish Cotán box” for their set-up. Additionally, students will draw their still-life through a framed grid of strings — in the tradition of Alberti and Durer — to further enhance the quality of Spanish naturalism.

This is an intense five-day class , but it’s as much fun as it is eye-opening. So, naturally, the class will end with Tapas and Rioja!

A great still-life painting is more than just placing a few objects on a table, and painting them as you see it.  It is about creating a space through the careful arrangement of values, edges, color and composition.  It is a story, narrated by the artist, and while it may seem spontaneous and fresh in appearance, there are many calculated steps along the way.

The key to any quick still-life painting is to be prepared.  A proper setup, the right tools, and the right mindset are all that is required to complete a small painting in 6 hours.  In this workshop we will paint three paintings over the course of three days.  Various techniques, such as brush drawing, comparative measure, and sight-size will be discussed and practiced which will all aid in completing the task at hand.

Composition, color, paint handling, and proper materials will all be discussed and explored.  Using the direct method (wet-on-wet), participants will compose and paint a small still-life, from start to finish in 6 hours.

All levels workshop but previous drawing and painting skills are encouraged.

In this workshop Katie will discuss the ins and outs of her method for painting peonies.

Working with Katie’s “petal-by-petal” technique, students will learn to create true floral portraits. We will work to slow down our painting process to observe the beautiful nuances of each flower.

We will begin the days of peony exploration with drawing. Using graphite and white chalk on toned paper, we will focus on the graphic qualities of each flower. Without worrying about color and brushstrokes, we are better able to study the form, anatomy, and petal formation.

After the first day of drawing, we will move on to painting.

Katie will explain how to create informed peony studies in oil, with accurate floral anatomy, light effect, and color. Starting with a simple drawing and underpainting, we will talk about how to take steps to make an accurate study while using time efficiently to record all necessary information.

Students will focus on painting and drawing just blooms, rather than a more formal still life setup. This narrowed focus will allow us to really dive into discovering the nuances of floral painting.

Floral painting experience recommended for this class.

Katie will provide flowers, and GCA provides ball jar vases but students are also welcome to bring their own.

  • July: The Monochrome Portrait w/Kevin Müller Cisneros & Dale Zinkowski - Registration Open

    July 14 - 16, 2018 (3 days)
    10am - 5pm • Saturday - Monday

    $450 ($225 deposit)
Registration Open. Deposit due upon registration. Final balance due by June 1, 2018.

    Limit: 12 students.
Package Suggestions: Take Katie Engberg's Portrait Drawing workshop before and Katie Engberg's Portrait in a Costume after.

Students will use a limited palette of three colors to achieve an under-painting that can stand on its own as a finished portrait, or be used as a strong foundation to continue a full-color painting in the future. Through individual critiques and demonstrations by both instructors, artists will learn to emphasize the beginning stages of a painting by addressing concepts of the block-in and form modeling.

Anatomy and structural points relating to the head will be discussed throughout the three days.

The first day will consist of a charcoal block-in drawn directly onto the canvas or panel. The drawing will then be spray-fixed to begin the wipe-out on the second day. As the third day arrives, students will proceed with the finishing pass by using a range of neutrals to push the under-painting toward a thoroughly elaborate work of art.

    Day One:
Materials lecture ( explanation of palette )
    Demo of charcoal drawing
    Examples of monochrome portraits shown
Charcoal drawing directly onto canvas or panel.  A finished drawing is the goal on the first day, so the second day can be devoted to the wipe-out and underpainting.  Drawing will be spray-fixed for the next days use

    Day Two:
Neutrals explained further in depth ( different combinations that can be used )
    Demo of wipe-out techniques
Students will tone their canvases with raw umber, and proceed with a wipe-out, the goal being to finish before lunch, in order for the painting to "set-up", and proceed with the finished pass.

    Day Three:
Students will use their range of neutrals to push their underpainting to a more finished stage.

It is recommended that the student has had prior experience drawing the portrait.

Whenever we are painting, regardless of the subject matter, what we are really painting is light.

In this workshop students will learn how to convincingly paint light and form in full color.  Through simple still life paintings students will learn how to take the mystery out of color painting.  Students will learn how to accurately mix color, how to avoid “dead” “muddy” or “chalky” color and most importantly, how to begin thinking of color not as a set of isolated pigments but rather as an interconnected series of relationships.

This class will include in depth lectures and demonstrations by the instructor on the properties of color and the physics of light, as well as detailed demonstrations and explanations of how to approach each step of the painting process from beginning to end.

In addition to learning about color and light, this course will serve as an opportunity for students to become familiar with each step of the process of creating finished paintings.  By keeping their subject matter simple, students will be able to take their paintings to a high level of finish and become comfortable with each step of the process, from the initial drawing all the way to adding the final touches at the end.

Whether you are a beginning student looking for an introduction to color painting or a more advanced painter looking to refine your understanding of light and color, this class will be a great opportunity to take your understanding to the next level. It's highly recommended that you begin with Sam Hung's Value workshop the week before.

In this workshop students will develop a figure drawing and painting, working from a live model, over the course of a single 2-week pose. This process will cover each step in creating a naturalistic figure painting, from initial block-in, to transferring the drawing onto canvas, to rendering form in oil paint.

The drawing portion lead by Jon Brogie will cover gesture, proportion, composition and important structural landmarks of the figure. When painting, Jessica Artman will go over the colors on her palette and discuss a systematic way to organize your visual impressions of hue value and chroma to a concept that relates to your palette. Topics surrounding color, such as color theory, form and zoning will be discussed to elevate sensitivity when translating our optical experience.

Throughout the workshop, instructors will provide demonstrations and personal critiques and reference historical masterworks. It is recommended that artists have some experience painting with oils.

This workshop will concentrate on the practical aspects of painting through the study of still life. Emphasis will be given to a more painterly apporach. We will strive to balance and maintain the careful color relationships that we see in nature through the knowledge imparted through concepts as well as understanding the more mechanical aspects of drawing and painting, such as paint handling, color mixing, brushwork, surface quality, etc.

Simple colorful objects such as fruits, vegetables, and cloth are encouraged in order to have a variety of hues and intensity of color.

Managing the palette is half the battle in painting. This class will strive to give a clear thinking process in order to dissect what we see in nature and translate it to the language of oil paint. This workshop is good for beginners or artists with more experience and will give participants the tools to approach each canvas with confidence.

In this five day workshop, artists will employ a limited palette inspired by the great Swedish painter Anders Zorn to create a portrait painting from the live model. Using just titanium white, yellow ochre, vermillion, and ivory black pigments, participants will discover how to achieve a surprisingly expansive range of colors by mixing careful modulations of hue, value, and chroma. By limiting the number of pigments, one can explore color space in a controlled manner, gain insight into color relationships, and develop strategies for translating the seemingly elusive colors we perceive in human flesh. Patrick will guide artists with daily demonstrations and in-depth personal critiques through each stage of the process. Cranial anatomy, materials, paint handling, and the physics of light will also be discussed throughout each session.

Some previous experience with oils is recommended.

In this three-day workshop inspired by the masterful paintings of Henri Fantin-Latour, participating artists will learn to create an alla prima floral painting from life that celebrates the beauty of flowers with freshness, sensitivity and lively detail. Using a lucid step-by-step approach, participants will paint a small bouquet of their own design using a direct painting method over the course of five days. Patrick will guide artists with daily demonstrations and in-depth personal critiques through each stage of the process – from creating a strong design with careful drawing, to color mixing, modeling form and finishing details. Basic botany, materials, paint handling, and the physics of light will also be discussed throughout each session.

Note: Participants are to bring their own flowers and vase for this workshop. GCA also has a few ball jars that can be used as a vase.
