Grand Central Atelier

Study - Spring Classes: Weekends

Evening and Weekend Studios are for serious artists of drawing, painting, and sculpture who share the Grand Central Atelier’s ideals, and who aspire to high artistic fluency.

As in the Grand Central Atelier, the studio program is progressive. Evening and weekend participants are encouraged to begin in the cast hall. For those who are passionate and ambitious, this is an exciting introduction to the study of nature through the lens of classical realism. Cast drawing artists will rapidly learn a tremendous number of complex and interrelated ideas. Only after this are they encouraged to explore the figure, portrait, and still life, all of which expand on those early foundations.

Additionally, evening and weekend studios provide portfolio opportunities for artists applying to the Grand Central Atelier, which views careful drawings as a sign of focused dedication.

In this studio, artists will learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting the portrait with an emphasis on accurate observation.  The same model and pose will be worked on for a series of sessions as artists strive to capture the likeness of the model first in the linear block-in drawing and finally in modeling the effect of light over the form.  Studies will begin with pencil on paper and move on to paint as participants demonstrate greater proficiency. Beginning to advanced artists are welcome.

It is recommended that artists have trained in the cast hall before taking portrait.

Whenever we are painting, regardless of the subject matter, what we are really painting is light.

In this course students will learn how to convincingly paint light and form in full color.  Through a combination of quick color mixing exercises and simple still life paintings students will learn how to take the mystery out of color painting.  Students will learn how to accurately mix color, how to avoid “dead” “muddy” or “chalky” color and most importantly, how to begin thinking of color not as a set of isolated pigments but rather as an interconnected series of relationships.

This class will include in depth lectures and demonstrations by the instructor on the properties of color and the physics of light, as well as detailed demonstrations and explanations of how to approach each step of the painting process from beginning to end.

In addition to learning about color and light, this course will serve as an opportunity for students to become familiar with each step of the process of creating finished paintings.  By keeping their subject matter simple, students will be able to take their paintings to a high level of finish and become comfortable with each step of the process, from the initial drawing all the way to adding the final touches at the end.

Whether you are a beginning student looking for an introduction to color painting or a more advanced painter looking to refine your understanding of light and color, this class will be a great opportunity to take your understanding to the next level.

In this weekly Sunday workshop, participating artists will learn to create alla prima portraits that evince the beauty and humanity of the model with freshness, sensitivity and lively detail. Using a lucid step-by-step approach, participants will paint a four hour portrait sketch from a new model at each session. Patrick will guide artists with demonstrations and in-depth personal critiques through each stage of the process – from creating a strong likeness with accurate drawing, to color mixing, modeling form and finishing details. Cranial anatomy, materials, paint handling, and the physics of light will also be discussed throughout each session. While this workshop is mainly geared towards painters with some previous experience in oils, artists who prefer to create portrait drawings in graphite or charcoal are also encouraged to participate.

Each session invites a new model to pose for a four-hour portrait. Workshop instruction combines guided group demonstrations with personalized one-on-one critiques.

The goal of this weekly class is to introduce the basics of figure drawing to beginners and emphasize the classical training methodology to artists with more experience. There are three distinct sections to the class that will build upon and develop the principles and concepts that artists training at the Grand Central Atelier use to draw the figure.

For the winter session of this class, any new beginner level students will be encouraged to start drawing from Bargue plates for the first 2 weeks before moving on to a block-in with the live model. The plates from the Charles Bargues drawing course were developed to highlight a figure’s proportion and gesture (character) through the simplest lines, shapes, and tone. They were created in the late 19th Century as an educational model for figure drawing and are still vital exercises today.

Students who are continuing from the Fall will work on 4-hour block-ins the first 4 weeks to continue to develop their eye in gesture, rhythm and proportion from the live model.

The last 6 weeks of the course will be devoted to one long pose each class where we will introduce modeling concepts.  form modeling. Critiques will transfer from a 2d gesture, shape and proportion discussion to a 3-dimensional interpretation through structure, anatomy and form.
