Grand Central Atelier

Study - Fall Classes: Weekends

Evening and Weekend Studios are for serious artists of drawing, painting, and sculpture who share the Grand Central Atelier’s ideals, and who aspire to high artistic fluency.

As in the Grand Central Atelier, the studio program is progressive. Evening and weekend participants are encouraged to begin in the cast hall. For those who are passionate and ambitious, this is an exciting introduction to the study of nature through the lens of classical realism. Cast drawing artists will rapidly learn a tremendous number of complex and interrelated ideas. Only after this are they encouraged to explore the figure, portrait, and still life, all of which expand on those early foundations.

Additionally, evening and weekend studios provide portfolio opportunities for artists applying to the Grand Central Atelier, which views careful drawings as a sign of focused dedication.

The goal of this weekly class is to introduce the basics of figure drawing to beginners and emphasize the classical training methodology to artists with more experience. There are three distinct sections to the class that will build upon and develop the principles and concepts that artists training at the Grand Central Atelier use to draw the figure.

The first 3 weeks are devoted to copying the classical Barque figure plates. The plates from the Charles Bargues drawing course were developed to highlight a figure’s proportion and gesture (character) through the simplest lines, shapes, and tone. They were created in the late 19th Century as an educational model for figure drawing and are still vital exercises today.

The second 3 weeks will apply the Bargue concepts to working with a live model. Artists will be challenged to establish key structural landmarks on the model through a series of short poses. Each class will consist of eight 5-minute poses, four 10-minute poses, one 20-minute pose with the second half consisting of one long pose. The goal for this section will be for artists to develop confidence in finding accurate proportions and gesture with a simple block-in figure drawing.

The next 3 weeks of the course will be devoted to one long pose each class in which students have the time to develop their block-in and move forward into form modeling. The final 3 weeks will be the same model/pose. Concepts will move beyond understanding the figure as a flat 2D shape to understanding and rendering its 3-dimensionality in pencil.

In this intensive class, students will be encouraged to complete lively sketches of the portrait from life within a 4-hour timeframe under natural light. Each week there will be a new model.

The class begins with a demonstration, breaking down the inevitable complexities of the human head in a simplified and economical fashion, emphasizing major light and shadow shapes, accurate proportion in relation to the overall portrait, local color mixing, value and chroma hierarchies and compositional design.

One-on-one instruction will also be provided to meet the student's artistic goals and ensure a thorough understanding of the concepts in this class. Previous experience painting in oils and working from life are recommended, although artists of all skill levels may freely participate. Students may choose to work in oil or graphite.
