GCA Instructors
Emilie Lee
Emilie Lee is a classically trained oil painter who’s work is inspired by her adventurous lifestyle and the joy she finds in nature. From the deserts of southern Utah to the Japanese Alps, she creates her landscape paintings on location in-between rock climbing sessions and laps in the backcountry.
After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in illustration, Emilie spent most of her twenties pursuing her passion for rock climbing while working as a freelance illustrator and writer. In 2008 she moved to New York City for the opportunity to study at the GCA where she completed four years in the core program followed by three years as a resident instructor. During this time she repeated five summers with the Hudson River Fellowship where she fell in love with plein air landscape painting.
In 2016 Emilie left New York to pursue her landscape painting career in earnest. Since then, many of her projects have focused on raising awareness and money for conservation efforts while allowing her to travel the world. Emilie recently settled in Carpinteria, California where she can be found painting on the beach with her dog Honeycrisp or packing for her next road trip to the mountains.
