Course Description
This class will be for teens to discover different drawing techniques and methods to find what they enjoy working with most. The first five weeks will consist of students working on one day portrait sketches with different techniques and materials. Weeks 5 through 10 will be for students to choose their favorite method learned from the previous 5 weeks and use that to work on one portrait drawing that will be refined and completed over the 5 sessions.
- Weeks 1 through 5 students will be encouraged to work on paper 9×12 inches to 11×14 inches, so they can complete smaller portrait sketches.
- Weeks 5 through 10 they will be encouraged to work larger on a 18×24 inch paper to complete a more finished portrait drawing.
Week 1: portrait drawing with graphite on white paper
Week 2: portrait drawing with graphite and white chalk on toned paper
Week 3: portrait drawing with red (sanguine) or brown pencil and white chalk on toned paper
Week 4: portrait drawing in three colors (graphite, red pencil, and white pencil) on toned paper
Week 5: portrait drawing with the reductive method (toning a paper with charcoal powder and then erasing out)
Week 6: this will be day 1 (block in day) of a 5 session portrait. Students will choose their favorite technique learned from the previous five classes, and using that start a larger long form portrait drawing.
Week 7: day 2 of 5, this day will be for refining the block in and model mapping
Week 8: day 3 of 5, this day will be a discussion of form and the first day for rendering
Week 9: day 4 of 5, continued rendering of the portrait
