Course Description
In this class, artists will learn the fundamentals of drawing and painting the portrait with an emphasis on accurate observation. The same model and pose will be worked on for a series of sessions as artists strive to capture the likeness of the model first in the linear block-in drawing and finally in modeling the effect of light over the form. Studies will begin with pencil on paper and move on to paint as participants demonstrate greater proficiency. Beginning to advanced artists are welcome.
What you will learn in this class:
- Block-in process using Comparative measurements. Shape finding, point to point relationship and Structure of the head and neck.
- Transfer Process in Oil or Charcoal.
- Color Study, Color and Value relationship
- The light effect: Concept of Form and Light on the portrait. Study of the topography of each feature. Form rendering either on graphite or panting. It is recommended that beginners students draw instead of paint and gain proficiency over time. Intermediate and advance students can work on painting.
- The process of painting with Layers (Fat over Lean): Block-in, Underpainting, Form Pass, Revision pass and overpasses.
Diana will instruct each Saturday, guide the students through each step and give individual critiques. She will paint alongside developing a demo in order to share with students the process.
