Course Description
This studio will serve as an introduction to the concepts of drawing and painting. We will start by covering the basics of how to approach an initial linear drawing, or “block-in” focusing on the various techniques that we can employ as we strive for accuracy in shape, proportion and gesture. We will then move straight into modeling form, three dimensionally, as we discuss the fundamentals and nuances of how light works as well as how to depict it on a two dimensional surface. During this time artists will learn to think about their drawings in sculptural terms by utilizing a conceptual understanding of light fall which will allow for a greater sense of depth and realism in their finished drawings and paintings.
Time will also be spent discussing materials as well as ways to set yourself up for success before you begin your drawing. Artists will be trained to think sculpturally, to make more accurate decisions, and to create drawings and paintings that are true to life. Students must study drawing first.
