Course Description
This workshop is designed for high school students who want to build strong foundations in observational drawing and oil painting while developing confidence, control, and personal expression.
Students will learn how to observe and simplify complex objects, translate what they see into clear shapes and values, and gradually build toward a finished still life painting. The class progresses step by step: beginning with drawing fundamentals and the transferring process, moving into the study of form through a monochromatic underpainting (grisaille), followed by an alla prima color poster study, and culminating in a final painting.
Throughout the process, students will learn how to mix color accurately, troubleshoot common painting challenges, and refine edges and transitions to strengthen focal points. By the end of the workshop, students will understand why each stage matters and how professional painters approach a painting from start to finish.
Students are encouraged to bring 1–3 simple still life objects to work from. Common everyday objects with a single overall tone and no patterns is recommended. Pears, oranges, ceramic bowls, bottles, mugs or similar forms are ideal, as they allow students to focus on form, light, and color rather than surface decor.
