Course Description
18th century French still life painting offers us a way to experience the life and culture of a specific time. Built on the foundations laid before them by Flemish and Italian painters, the French provide insight into both common and aristocratic lifestyles by means of the objects chosen in their paintings. These works were not only painted and composed beautifully but also hold meaning and cultivate an appreciation for a culture rich in history.
In this 8-week class we will compose and paint a finished still life inspired by the 18th century French tradition. Painting from direct observation, artists will work alongside Dale as he demonstrates the process he uses to create his indirect paintings. The value study, color study, block-in and transfer, wipeout underpainting, first pass, and final pass will all be thoroughly demonstrated and explained.
We will look at a few different images of historical French still life painting each week for inspiration that will include a casual group discussion.
Artists are encouraged to have their compositions thought out and ready to be discussed on the first day. We will go over each setup individually and talk about some options for the painting.
