“Devin’s Light and Form is easily the best art class I have ever taken. I feel like it has completely transformed my handling of value transitions and understanding of modeling form. Devin is a clear, interesting, and very encouraging teacher.” – Suzanne

Course Description

In part two of the Drawing Light and Form course, students will take the concepts discussed in parts one and two and really put them into practice. While working from life directly from plaster casts, students will refine their ability to model form and increasingly grow in their abilities to recreate the specific forms seen in the subject.  Time will be spent discussing how to approach complex subjects from a “form-based” mindset rather than falling back into optical habits when confronted with a challenge as well as how to utilize the sphere as a guide for modeling form, even when the subject is not particularly spherical.  We will also discuss how to approach reflected light and begin to refine our understanding of the “exponential drop” in light as we turn around a form.

This second section of the course is an important part of the overall process of incorporating the knowledge learned in part one and really learn to work with these concepts in our day-to-day studio practice.  By spending time practicing the skill of modeling form, the concepts will begin to move from a purely conceptual set of ideas into an integral part of our picture making process.

Students can repeat Drawing Light & Color 2 as many times as they wish to work on increasingly more challenging casts.
Students must provide their own casts.

Note: The class will be conducted on the Zoom platform and is a live online experience.
It will be necessary for students to have access to a computer, tablet or smartphone. The recommended device is a laptop or desktop.
