“The GCA Drawing Bootcamp helped me level up my technical and conceptual abilities to a level I never thought possible within 4 weeks, and it concretized my certainty that I wanted to study at GCA’s full time Core Program. I can’t recommend this bootcamp and its incredible instructors enough.” – Gabriela Nighan, First Year Core Student

Course Description

This series of workshops is an opportunity to learn many of the key concepts taught at GCA in a short, condensed time frame. Artists will be trained to think sculpturally, to make more accurate decisions, and to create drawings that are true to life.

  • The series will include demonstrations/lectures on each step of the process as well as frequent one on one critiques from the instructor.
  • Students will work at their own pace on their own drawings.
  • However, due to the short time frame, emphasis will be put on learning and understanding concepts, rather than creating completely finished works of art.

Cast: By working in the controlled setting of the cast hall, students will be given an opportunity to focus on the fundamental concepts of depicting light and form, which are at the heart of the entire Grand Central Atelier’s method of drawing and painting. We will start by discussing how to approach an initial linear drawing (the “block-in”) focusing on the various techniques that we can employ as we strive for accuracy in shape, proportion and gesture. We will then move straight into modeling form, three dimensionally, as we discuss the fundamentals and nuances of how light works as well as how to depict it on a two dimensional surface. During this time students will learn to think about their drawings in sculptural terms by utilizing a conceptual understanding of light fall which will allow for a greater sense of depth and realism in their finished drawings and paintings. Time will also be spent discussing materials as well as ways to set yourself up for success before you begin your drawing.

Portrait: Expanding upon the concepts from Week 1, participants will execute a sensitive and precise portrait drawing from life. After developing a refined block-in, with an emphasis on structure, proportions, and likeness, we will proceed to thoroughly rendering three-dimensional form using a method commonly referred to as window shading. Daily demonstrations and critiques will focus on the properties of light and its relationship to the portrait, as well as values, anatomy, perspective, and manipulation of materials. Artists of all levels are welcome.

Figure: During the second half of the Boot Camp, artists will further develop and strengthen a skill set for drawing the live model. A series of short poses will lead into a long pose that will last for the remainder of the two weeks. Instructors will guide participants through the figure drawing process with demonstrations and in-depth critiques. The process begins with the “block in”, which aims to capture the dynamic gesture as well as accurate proportion and shapes. After, participants will move into modeling form through an understanding of the light source. Basic anatomy, materials, comparative measuring, light and form will be discussed.

Lucas and Jon will alternate teaching.
