Course Description

Enhance your understanding of the portrait and improve your drawing skills by studying the portrait from multiple angles. In this course, students will study portrait drawing from the three primary angles they are likely to encounter in their work: the front, profile, and three-quarters views. Each angle will be covered in detail through demonstration drawings, and lectures focusing on block-in strategies, techniques, structural anatomy, aesthetics, and more. Participants will also complete block-in drawings of each angle to be individually critiqued during class. Working from life is strongly encouraged, either in the form of self-portraits or with another sitter. However, students will also have the opportunity to work from master copies or a combination of both. This is a great opportunity to begin the transition to working from life for artists who have primarily been studying through the time-honored practice of master copying, while also gaining deeper insight into one of the most challenging subject matters — the human portrait.
